What is water softening?
Water softening is the process used to soften hard water. It is a process of removing calcium, magnesium and certain other positive ions from water. This process prevents scaling of minerals on pipes, fixtures, hot-water heaters. Water softening can be achieved using water softeners.

What is water purification?
Water purification is the process of removing impurities, microbes, chemicals, turbidity and other contaminants from water. There are several methods to purify water. They are boiling, distillation, filtration, chlorination.
- Boiling: It is the easiest and cheapest method of water purification. When water boiled at high temperature, microbes are killed. It is safe and healthy to drink.
- Distillation: Distillation is one of the methods for water purification which involves vaporisation and condensation of water. It removes contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, volatile gases, organic and inorganic chemicals. Distilled water is clean and pure.
- Chlorination: It is one of the effective methods of water purification where water can be purified using chlorine tablets or liquid chlorine. This process kills germs, parasites and other disease causing pathogens in water.
- Filtration: This methods uses water filter to remove suspended particles like parasites, bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and other contaminants from water. There are different types of water filters like Ultra Violet disinfection, Sediment filter, Reverse Osmosis filter, Ion exchange filters.
- Ultraviolet Disinfection (UV): In UV disinfection, Ultra Violet rays are used to kill microbial contaminants from water. This method is effective, economical, safe and chemical free.
- Reverse Osmosis (RO): Reverse Osmosis is one of the most popular water purification technology. In this method, water is allowed to pass through the semi-permeable membrane under pressure. It removes contaminants such as microbes, chemicals, odour, dirt, organic and inorganic compounds, salts and minerals.
How is water purification different from water softening?
Water Purification removes contaminants from water thus making it safe and healthy to drink. On the other hand, water softening removes only excess minerals from water and make it soft. Water Softeners are for hard water whereas water purifiers are for both hard and soft water and makes it pure, safe and healthy to drink.
