We all know that three by fourth of the Earth is filled with water. It covers about 71% of the Earth. Only 29% of the Earth’s surface is land area. Of the total water available, saltwater covers about 97% and remaining 3% is freshwater approximately. About 1% of the freshwater can be easily accessible to our needs and remaining 2% freshwater is frozen in glaciers, ice caps or in aquifers which is deep underground.

There are different sources of water. Some of them are listed below

Of these sources, except sea and oceans other water bodies have freshwater which can be used.

Water from the water bodies can be consumed directly because it contains sediments, hazardous chemicals like herbicide, pesticide, microbes like bacteria, virus, fungi, algae, protozoa, poisonous metals like mercury, lead. All these impurities and contaminants should be removed in order to prevent water-borne diseases like typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, polio. The process of removing detrimental contaminants and impurities from water is called water purification and is done using water purifiers. According to purifiers, water can be classified into two types. They are

  • Soft water

What do you mean by hard water?

Water with high amount of mineral contents and dissolved salts is called hard water. Minerals like magnesium and calcium will be present in larger amounts. The pH level of hard water will be 8.5 and above.

What do you mean by soft water?

Water with low concentration levels of magnesium and calcium ions but large amount of sodium ions is called soft water.

How do you know whether the water is hard or soft?

There are some signs from which you can identify whether it is a hard water or soft water. They are

  • While dishwashing the glasses and silver utensils come up with white patchy deposits. This is due to the presence of high amount of calcium carbonate which indicates the water is hard.
  • The pressure level of water flowing through pipes gets low due to the hardness of water where the minerals get deposited in the pipes whereas softwater do not have mineral deposits in the faucets or pipes.
  • If the water is hard, you may need to wash your hand for a long time since the soap you use react with calcium to form soap scum.

Water softener is a filtration system which is used to soften hard water by removing high concentrated minerals like magnesium and calcium and thus by adding high concentration of sodium in it.
